Enabling the Browsium Client extension for Microsoft Edge on non domain joined machines

Applies to

Browsium Client 4.4.0 and newer

Summary

Microsoft now requires machines to be domain joined or sideloading to be manually enabled to successfully sideload extensions for the Edge browser. This presents some problems for deploying in a non-domain joined environment as you will need to re-enable the extension each time you open a new Edge browser instance.

Details

You can turn on sideloading in Microsoft Edge by performing the following steps in an Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later version of Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

  1. Navigate to ‘about:flags’ in the Edge browser.
  2. Check the ‘Enable extension developer features’ box pictured below.

You will then need to ensure that the extension is enabled every time you launch an instance of Microsoft Edge. This is not a concern once the machine has been domain joined as the extension will be not be disabled automatically. Unfortunately, this is due to how Microsoft is handling extensions in Edge and is a limitation imposed by the browser.
